KATE GARRAWAY has opened up about her “tough” day yesterday, as she marked her first birthday in 16 years without her husband Derek Draper by her side.
Kate Garraway took to Instagram today to discuss her birthday. The Good Morning Britain host gave her 716,000 followers an update on her husband Derek Draper’s health, as he battles coronavirus in hospital.
The 53-year-old spent her special day with the couple’s children: daughter Darcey, 14, and son William.
She branded it “tough” as she said the hole left by Derek was “very present” to them.
However, the ITV favourite said they focused on “the small things” that bring “joy” as her spouse, who she wed back in 2005, remains in hospital.
Kate showed her gratitude to all those that had made her day special, but saved her biggest thanks for the NHS staff looking after him.
She said he was “still with us”, and those around him were “battling everyday” to aid his recovery.
The star’s moving post included two snaps, one of her impressive biscuit-themed cake from her colleagues.
The second of Derek, who was pictured in a newspaper clipping during his student days.
Kate had captioned them: “So yesterday was always going to be a tough one – 1st birthday in 16 years without Derek – so for the kids & I, his abscence was very present.
“But we resolved to do what I think we are all having to do at the moment arent we – treasure & be grateful for the love around us – however distanced we are from it.”
The mother-of-two continued: “And focus on the joy of life & love in the moment – the small things that are huge & really should be at the core of everyday, but usually the everyday gets in the way.
“So THANK YOU so much for all your messages they mean such a lot, to the friends @itv who sent chocolate for the kids & uplifting smellies for me, to mates who dropped off food, posh teabags & milk & made me smile at silliness.”
Kate then said Derek is a “great believer in the healing power of silliness”.
She went on: “To my amazing family, to Dereks friends who sent me messages of fun times they have had with him.
“(Pictured is when Derek was editing a student newspaper – insert your own ‘his taste in birds’ joke here!).”
Kate then stated: “And the strangers who got this cake >>> from @romankemp & all at @global & worked out it was actually meant for me (was it the bourbons that gave it away?) – THANK YOU all.”
The broadcaster signed off: “But most of all thank you to the NHS teams keeping Derek still with us e& battling everyday to inch him toward recovery #hope #positivethinking #standtogether.”
Kate was immediately inundated with well wishers and numerous replies from her famous friends.
Fellow presenter Kate Thornton told her: “Sending you all the love in the world Kate.”
Lizzie Cundy wrote: “Thinking of you so much darling… love and prayers with dear Derek.”
