Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) is about to get the shock of his life in Emmerdale when Dan Spencer (Liam Fox) unexpectedly turns up with his son Archie, the boy he had with former employee Rachel Breckle (Gemma Oaten).
Fans will recall a bitter battle for Archie between the pair as it was at a time when Jai was at his most loathsome. He has come a long way since then and he is shocked when Dan breaks the news that Rachel is dead.
Following the tragic demises of both Ruby and Ali, it seems that this is a family that has no luck whatsoever when it comes to early female mortality – but what does this mean for Jai now as Dan hands over Archie into his care.
Jai and Archie have grown apart, with Jai admitting to Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) that he didnt even send his son a Christmas card last year. Understandably, amid the confusion of losing his mum, Archie is reluctant to be near Jai as he doesnt recognise him and is suddenly surrounded by unfamiliar faces.
As Jai struggles both to process the tragic news of Rachels passing and his own guilt over being an absent father, he needs to up his game quick and make an effort to ensure that he can bond with Archie.
That is set to be easier said than done though, as he struggles to make headway with the lad. As Jai despairs that he doesnt have it in him to be a good dad to Archie – especially in his time of need – can Laurel and the rest of the Sharmas help him?
