Holby City review with spoilers: Cameron confronts Ric after shock arrival of Darlas baby

Ric Griffins mental deterioration on Holby City has been played out very gradually over a couple of months. Its gone from a little bit of forgetfulness that can be easily brushed off to todays almost life-altering mistake, in which a woman who only needed antibiotics could well have woken up with half her intestines missing.

Even more upsetting (though possibly not for the patient with the bowel problem) is the way his personality has altered, and this was glaringly apparent in his lack of thought for granddaughter Darla in this episode. He was supposed to be going with her to a midwife appointment, but completely forgot.

She was left sitting in his office for most of the day and eventually Cameron suggested she should eat something as she was feeling dizzy. They went to Pulses for a milkshake, but it wouldnt have been an interesting enough setting for a dramatic birth scene (too many doctors too close to hand). Instead Cameron forgot his wallet, the unspeaking lady behind the counter at Pulses refused to hand over the drinks to a junior doctor and a heavily pregnant teenager without payment (nice), so they went to Camerons flat to get the money. It was there that Darlas waters broke and Cameron realised he might have to deliver the baby himself.

Ric did manage to get there, but by then Darla had admitted to Cameron that Rics behaviour was sometimes a bit erratic and she didnt want granddad anywhere near her. Cameron delivered the baby with the help of an obstetrician friend on his phone despite it being breech and not an easy delivery. Nic Jackman and Naomi Katiyo played these scenes brilliantly, as of course did Hugh Quarshie – it was really upsetting to see Ric sidelined at the moment when he would usually have been needed the most.

Back at the hospital, Cameron asked Ric if he thought he might possibly be showing signs of dementia. We know from Rics recent search history that hes been thinking along those lines himself, but he had a right go at Cameron instead, taunting him that hell never be anywhere as good a doctor as his mother. Whats it going to take for Ric to admit that he needs help?

When Essie needed help this week, the person she went to was, of course, the glorious Sacha. Baby Isla was seriously ill and Sacha diagnosed a twisted bowel. Because Essie isnt really the official adoptive parent of Isla she didnt have her medical records and she didnt have the authority to sign the consent form for surgery. She was forced to tell Sacha what had really happened. She told him she was terrified that shed be struck off as a nurse if the truth came out. She also told him that the reason she wasnt accepted by the adoption agency was that shes only recently had cancer and she hadnt been in remission for long enough. This was a difficult position for Sacha to be in, but he loves the bones of Essie and is standing by her – for now. And Isla had her operation and is going to be fine.
