While we can only empathise because we know its going to be terrifying to watch, Joaquin Phoenix has voiced his fears of playing The Joker.
We eagerly anticipate his turn as failed comedian Arthur Fleck in the backstory to the classic Batman foe.
With rave reviews already populating our senses after it premiered at Venice Film Festival – receiving an eight-minute standing ovation and taking home the top Golden Lion award – were anticipating brilliance.
Still, 44-year-old Joaquin has revealed he had no real preconceptions going into the title role in Todd Phillips upcoming DC Comics blockbuster, and the potential for danger is what sold him on the role.
Seems he likes to be scared.
He told the New York Times: I didnt really know what it was. I didnt know how to classify it.
I didnt say, “This is the character Im playing.” I didnt know what we were going to do. It was terrifying.
Joaquin explained his criteria for his roles is quite a simple one, in that the projects have to carry a unique vision above all else.
The Walk The Line star added: I dont really care about genre or budget size, anything like that. Its just whether there is a filmmaker that has a unique vision, has a voice, and the ability to make the film.
With Oscars whispers already surrounding his take on the villain, Joaquin revealed he always asks himself the same question when it comes to deciding whether or not to take on a new project, and he only sees his film career coming to an end when either he or the audience gets bored.
He said: Whats going to keep me excited or inspired, and wanting to work hard?
If I dont feel like Im pushing myself in some ways, Ill get bored, or maybe theyll get bored of me. I dont know whos going to get bored of who first.
Director Todd recently admitted it was a challenge to convince Phoenix to star in the upcoming movie.
He said: I was going to his house, basically begging him to do the movie. I go, “So I keep coming up here every day. At some point you, you gotta say are you in or out”.
