Fans who clutched their pearls and gasped at the Jane The Virgin mid-season cliffhanger may be shocked to know that the show’s actors were left ‘just as surprised’ – because the producers won’t put them in their ‘circle of trust’.
It seems as if the showrunners for the critically acclaimed satirical romantic comedy-drama work extremely hard to keep the shocking plotlines under wraps.
Jaime Camil, who plays Rogelio de la Vega, the overdramatic but loving father of the titular heroine Jane Villanueva, revealed that the actors aren’t exactly in the ‘circle of trust’ when it comes to the show’s most shocking twists.
Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, the 44-year-old Mexican actor said: ‘We say this often and I don’t think people believe us but we are not kept in the circle of trust of Jennie Urman, our show producer. Like, we honestly don’t know.
‘We sit at the table reading and we are equally as surprised as the audience when they see the show live,’ Jaime told us.
Referring to a first season plotline that left viewers itching to find out the true identity of the mysterious crime lord Sin Rostro, the former telenovela star admitted that the entire cast including Gina Rodriguez, who plays Jane, was kept in the dark until the last possible minute.
‘We found out who Sin Rostro is at the table read,’ he laughed.
But there was an exception to this rule when it came to filming the shows, which is currently in it’s fourth’s season, most famous and shocking scene.
Many die-hard Jane The Virgin fans may still be heartbroken over of the shock death of Jane’s husband Michael who was played by Brett Dier – and executive producer Jennie saw fit to take it easy on her cast members by warning them in advance this time around.
Speaking of the season three events, which aired in February, Jaime said: ‘The only thing we knew in advance was when Michael died because we all love Brett.
‘Jennie was kind enough to call us one month before Michael’s death to let us know because it was supposed to happen in season two, but we kept Brett along because he brought so much to the show. Also because the chemistry between him and Gina was so amazing. She didn’t want it to catch us by surprise.’
When we asked the father-of-two if he bears many similarities with the fan favourite character he couldn’t help but note that his fashion styles are worlds apart.
‘I don’t wear lavender,’ he joked. ‘And I am not THAT narcissistic. Notice that I say “that”?’
Of course, Jaime and Rogelio are both telenovela superstars in Latin America with Jaime being a former cast member of La Fea Más Bella, the original and Mexican version of Ugly Betty – but it’s their love for their family that Jaime feel draws them together.
‘I love my family. Rogelio is a family man and he loves his family dearly,’ he explained. ‘I have a six-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son and a beautiful wife. And I love being a dad and a parent.’
On paper, the character of Rogelio sounds like an unbearable character and Jaime credits the incredible reaction his performance has caused amongst fans to the show creators.
‘Rogelio could be a character that could go so wrong but they write it so well. Rogelio can make you laugh and he can also make you feel – and that’s the beauty of the character and I have to thank Jennie Urman and her amazing team of writers for coming up with such a well-balanced person,’ he said.
Jaime, who also voices Papa Rivera in Disney Pixar’s Coco, confirmed to Metro.co.uk that the cast will return to work for their table read on 3 January.
Jane The Virgin returns to Netflix UK late January.
