Hat-trick hero Tye stars as Scorchers beat Sixers in Big Bash

Ashton Turner has guided the Perth Scorchers to an against-the-odds six-wicket win over the Sydney Sixers to open their Big Bash League title defence.

Despite a host of key injuries, the Scorchers did enough to get over the line on Saturday at the SCG, reaching 4-136 in 18.1 overs.

After the Sixers posted a modest total of 132, the Scorchers were in trouble at 4-78 after 14 overs before Turner turned the game with a timely half-century.

Turner (52 not out) and skipper Adam Voges (19 not out) guided the Scorchers to a morale-boosting win.

The Perth side were missing Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Coulter-Nile because of injury, as well as Michael Klinger due to personal reasons, however shrugged it off to run out comfortable victors.

Openers Will Bosisto (21) and Josh Philippe (7) gave the Scorchers a positive start in their BBL debuts, before falling to Sean Abbott (3-28) in successive balls.

The Sixers' bowlers managed to turn the screws as the required run rate crept up to more than nine an over.

Turner, however, belted 16 off a Daniel Sams over before slogging Abbott for back-to-back sixes to turn the game.

Earlier, the Sixers were dismissed for a paltry 132 with Andrew Tye claiming a hat-trick to finish off the home side's innings.

Medium paceman Tye has claimed two of the three hat-tricks in BBL history, after taking three wickets in three balls in January against the Brisbane Heat.

After the Sixers' top order collapsed to be 5-46 after seven overs, they only avoided the ignominy of their lowest total (99 against the Scorchers in 2014 at the SCG) after Sean Abbott (23) and Stephen O'Keefe (23) ensured the tail wagged.
