Broad Citys Ilana Glazer & Abbi Jacobson Talk “Grief Of Trump” And Series Final Season – The Contenders Emmys Video

Theres a delightful absurdity that comes with Broad City and the shows brand of humor, but when the election happened and Donald Trump became President, the show began to lean into political overtones. During Deadlines The Contenders Emmy event, creators and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson talked about how they processed the “grief of Trump” and why Season 5 is a good way to end the comedy.

Glazer said that Season 4 was an opportunity for them to explore the aftermath of Trumps election — specifically New Yorks grief. Jacobson points out that the political themes came naturally because after being on hiatus for three months, they all came back after the election and couldnt stop talking about it. “We couldnt help but infuse it in the show,” she said.

“We bleeped Trumps name and that felt really good,” said Glazer. “I wish that was a real device in real life.”

The comedy duo have been doing Broad City since 2009, when it was still a web series, and the fifth season will mark an end to the TV versions of themselves. Even though fans would love to see them continue their twentysomething New York City antics, Jacobson and Glazer feel its time to say goodbye to the pair that had us saying “Yas queen!” on a weekly basis.

“We have been doing this for 10 years,” said Jacobson. “”It feels like a thing that cant go on forever — like your twenties. Creatively, it felt like a perfect time [to end].”
