You’ve probably heard of legendary comedy double act Morecambe and Wise, but have you heard the name Eddie Braben?
A new drama series about the forgotten screenwriter behind the iconic pair’s comedy shows is on TV on Friday night, as well as a new documentary featuring a host of behind-the-scenes material from the pair’s careers.
If you’re a Morecambe and Wise fan, you better start ordering that takeaway because you’re in for a real treat tonight!
In Eric, Ernie and Me, Trollied’s Stephen Tompkinson plays scriptwriter Eddie Braben, while Line Of Duty’s Mark Bonnar plays Eric Morecambe and High Rise’s Neil Maskell plays Ernie Wise.
For over a decade, Liverpudlian ex market stall trader Eddie Braben penned Morecambe and Wise’s material, reshaping the double act into the Eric and Ernie that the nation took to its heart.
More: Christmas TV
Eric, Ernie & Me follows the story of how The Golden Triangle was formed and celebrates the man behind Morecambe and Wise’s greatest successes.
Year on year, a new series, a new Christmas special, incredible celebrity guests and the never-ending commute from home in Liverpool to work in London saw Eddie work himself to the point of exhaustion.
A man desperate for a break but driven by perfection and the need to make people laugh.
Eric, Ernie & Me culminates in a journey to the iconic 1977 Christmas Show, celebrates a decade of enormous success for both Eddie and Morecambe & Wise whilst not shying away from the pressure and pain Eddie went through to help create the screen work of Britain’s most beloved double act.
The separate documentary Eric & Ernie’s Home Movies – also on tonight – provides a unique insight into the pair and their lives at home and abroad, on holiday and relaxing between work engagements, and is combined with new interviews with those who knew them best.
Eric, Ernie & Me airs Friday night at 9pm on BBC Four. Eric & Ernie’s Home Movies airs Friday night at 8pm on BBC Two.
