Comedian Harry Hill loves a good laugh – but he’s not laughing about an unresolved spat he had with X Factor mogul Simon Cowell.

The zany comedian and badger lover – whose new series Tea Time starts on 2 January – had been tasked with creating a spoof X Factor musical, titled I Can’t Sing in 2014, which flopped.

However, X Factor head honcho Simon Cowell was apparently left livid at Hill for his character, played by Nigel Harman, him ‘as an idiot’ in the spoof musical – but Harry Hill refused to budge on the character and their relationship quickly dissolved.

According to The Mirror, Harry recalled the spat, saying: ‘He sent me an email after he came to one of the previews and the email said some very good points about lighting and sound because he is a good producer.

‘But he added however, “I feel my character, the character of Simon Cowell, is made to look a bit of an idiot”. And I thought ‘uh-oh.’

The wacky former doctor, remembered how he ignored Simon’s request to change the character: ‘I just ignored him. I thought that was the best bet. It is fine – I haven’t heard from him since.’

‘I managed to get through to Simon Cowell and suddenly we were in his office pitching this idea and he says “yes, what do we have to do? I am giving you the green light – you are coming to London”.

And then me and Steve stumble outside and think “what are we going to do now? We have to write it”’, Harry concluded – explaining how the original idea came to be as a result ‘of a few drinks’.

Harry Hill’s Tea Time returns to Sky One on 2 January.
