Arsenal have submitted a €40 million (£35m) offer to Juventus for Medhi Benatia, according to reports in Italy.

Arsene Wenger is open to strengthening his options in the January transfer window and is looking for cover in central defence.

Sky Italia report that the Gunners have already lodged a bid for Benatia, who joined Juve on a permanent deal from Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

But the report also claims that the Serie A champions have already rejected Arsenal’s offer and are not willing to sell the Morocco international.

Benatia has made just eight Serie A appearances for Juve this season but has been one of their key players.

Wenger, meanwhile, has publicly admitted that he would be opening to signing a new player in the upcoming window.

‘You do not imagine that we will change 10 players in January,’ the Arsenal boss told beIN Sports earlier this month.

‘If we can find some additions to strengthen our squad we will do it.’
