A man who was accidentally run over by a truck at Mataranka may have been sheltering beneath the vehicle during heavy rain, Northern Territory Police believe.
The 29-year-old's body was found on Thursday evening at a truck bay on the Stuart Highway near the Mataranka Hotel, about 420 kilometres south-east of Darwin.
"The CCTV footage that we've got from the area shows it was pouring at the time," Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mick Schumacher said.
"And unfortunately it just so happens the truck driver has driven forward and not known this person was sheltering under the back of the truck and he's subsequently been injured."
It was not until Saturday afternoon that police in Katherine located the vehicle linked to the incident.
"We've identified a truck that we believe was involved in the incident and the truck has been forensically examined," Senior Sergeant Schumacher said.
The driver will not face any charges.
"We've interviewed the driver and are very confident that he had no knowledge that he was actually involved in this incident," he said.
Police are preparing a report for the coroner and are continuing to appeal for any witnesses or motorists with dash-cam footage to contact them.
"This is just an unfortunate collection of circumstances and this poor chap's been injured and as a result he's died from his injuries," Senior Sergeant Schumacher said.
The Northern Territory's road toll for 2017 is 31, compared with 44 at the same time last year.
